Product details
The BB-62 USS New Jersey was the most decorated battleship in the history of the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1991. It was commissioned in 1943 as the second of a total of six Iowa-class battleships. However, numbers five and six, BB-65 Illinois and BB-66 Kentucky, were never completed and were ultimately scrapped. Like the other ships of the Iowa class, the USS New Jersey had a displacement of 45,000 tons, a power output of 212,000 horsepower, and was armed with nine 16-inch (40.6 cm) guns, distributed across three triple turrets (two forward and one aft) with a maximum range of up to 40 km. The Iowa-class ships were 270.4 meters long and had a relatively narrow hull with a maximum width of 33 meters, allowing them to pass through the Panama Canal without difficulty.
After serving in major battles in the Pacific during World War II, the USS New Jersey was reactivated for both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. In 1982, the ship was completely renovated, modernized, and equipped with the latest weaponry. Following the Lebanon conflict, the New Jersey was also deployed during the Gulf War in 1991 before being finally decommissioned.
