Compared to the Challenger 1 MBT, which was in service during the Gulf War, the Challenger 2 features the improved second generation of Chobham armor and a new 120 mm L30 rifled main gun. Over 120 Challenger 2 tanks were deployed during Operation Telic in Iraq in the spring of 2003.
