Product details

There are three types of M.2 SSDs. Make sure you understand the differences between them and know whether your system or motherboard supports them before pairing them with your SilverStone product.

The first type is used for SATA SSDs and connects via the AHCI driver and the SATA 3.0 interface (6 Gbit/s) through the M.2 connector.

The second type is used for PCI Express SSDs, which also connect via the AHCI driver and provide PCI Express lanes. This allows for backward compatibility with the widely used SATA support in operating systems, but it has the drawback of suboptimal performance since AHCI is used to access PCI Express SSDs.

The third type is also used for PCI Express SSDs, but connects via the NVMe driver. This offers PCI Express lanes as a powerful and scalable host controller interface specifically designed and optimized for interfacing with PCI Express SSDs. NVMe was built from the ground up to leverage the low latency and parallelism of PCI Express SSDs and to complement the parallelism of modern CPUs, platforms, and applications.
