Alex Prager (born 1979) is a Californian and one of the most innovative and original photographers and filmmakers of the younger generation. With professional actors, friends or family members, she stages scenarios in hyper-realistic settings that seem familiar, but at the same time are alienating, often eerie and disturbing. It's no coincidence that Prager's series are distantly reminiscent of Cindy Sherman's film Stills: the rich heritage of Hollywood is just as unmistakably present in her images, which tell stories without beginning or end, as is the influence of American street photography and pop culture - except that in her work, black and white is replaced by the garish colorfulness of advertising aesthetics.
