High-quality (FDB) fluid-dynamic bearing fans are designed to utilize the shock absorption effects of oil. They are extremely reliable and produce significantly less operational noise and heat compared to ball bearing fans. The self-lubrication of the bearing surface reduces friction, vibration, and thus lowers overall power consumption. Reduced friction, increased lifespan, and robust construction are the main features of these fans.

As the shaft rotates, a thin layer of oil rises between the bearing surfaces due to the pressure along the grooves of the bearing sleeve, providing continuous self-lubrication. As the speed increases, the dynamic oil pressure also rises, lifting the shaft out of the bearing, resulting in low-friction rotation, and the herringbone shape enhances this effect.
