Already in the late 1970s, the Kombinat Fortschritt Landmaschinen began planning for the successor to the highly successful ZT 300 series. Due to the excellent foundation provided by the ZT 303 and ZT 323 models, the 320 series was not a completely new development, but rather a comprehensive and well-considered model refinement based on the predecessor model. After the base model of the new series, the ZT 320, was already considered technically outdated at its introduction due to the lack of all-wheel drive, VEB Traktorenwerk Schönebeck quickly focused on the production of the ZT 323. This model had become significantly more efficient in terms of fuel consumption compared to the ZT 303 during the model refinement, thus seamlessly continuing its sales success.
