The Function

The lens hood (also known as a flare hood or sunshade) reduces side light entering the sensor. This minimizes lens flares, which enhances image quality. Images appear less flat and low in contrast when using the lens hood. Additionally, the lens hood provides some protection for the front lens against rain and light bumps or touches (fingerprints). For space-saving transport, we recommend mounting the lens hood "backwards" onto the lens.
