Product details
The Boeing B-17F was the first Flying Fortress to be produced in mass. The most famous aircraft from this series was a B-17F that was delivered on July 15, 1942, and entered service with the 324th Bomber Squadron in England. The crew named it Memphis Belle after the pilot Lt. Robert K. Morgan's girlfriend. Its fame stemmed from the fact that it was officially the first bomber of the US Army Air Force in Europe to survive 25 missions and became the star of a Hollywood propaganda film. After this service, the Memphis Belle was ordered back to the United States with its crew. Later, it was purchased by the city of Memphis and displayed outdoors as a monument. A total of 12,677 B-17 aircraft were produced.
The model features detailed surfaces with recessed panel lines, a detailed cockpit with consoles and instrument panel, as well as individual seats. It includes a complete bomb bay with loading racks and four bombs, a bomb sight, and a seat in the nose. The detailed radio operator/navigator compartment has equipment boxes. There are options for side windows for the MG configuration, a movable MG ball turret, and a detailed upper MG turret.
The model includes B-17 clear parts for the front and the mid-upper MG position, as well as a rear MG position and a separate rudder. The wings can be built with open flaps if desired. Four detailed radial engines with exhaust rings are included, and the cooling ring can be built open or closed. Additionally, there is a turbocharger imitation, separate air intake channels, as well as separate elevators and ailerons, and a detailed landing gear.
Decals for two USAAF versions are included: B-17F-10-BO, serial number 41-24485, DF-A, "Memphis Belle", 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group, 324rd Bomb Squadron, Bassingbourn, UK, May 1943, and B-17F-10-BO, serial number 42-29591, LL-Z, "The Shamrock Special", 8th Air Force, 91st Bomb Group, 401st Bomb Squadron, Bassingbourn, UK, October 1943.
