High quality product with great software.

The Synology 'Plus' series of devices has long had a reputation for delivering mid-range hardware to mid-sized business users. Because of this, the DS1621+ needs to strike a fine balance between fast and reliable hardware while offering a price point that won't intimidate the average mid-market user. In this regard, I think the Synology DS1621+ NAS does everything right and strikes an impressive middle ground between these two factors. However, it is important that buyers understand what they are buying and where the price point for the Synology DS1621+ is targeted. Although it seems to lack some of the multimedia and prosumer features of the 'cheaper' NAS devices in Synology's portfolio, it doubles down on efforts to support this core audience by adding more business and enterprise level features. It's all about getting the right tool for the job and in this area Synology is almost completely successful. The lack of standard gigabit connectivity (is expandable with 10Gbe PCIE card) offered to a NAS device at this price point compared to competitors may put some users off, but overall you get good performance and excellent value for this combined hardware and software solution with excellent scalability.

    Upgrade to 1621+

I upgraded from 916+ to the 1621+ mainly because I need the faster CPU. So far I'm very happy with the overall performance of the system, even though I haven't even upgraded the memory yet. Can only recommend it to anyone who needs to make a tradeoff between price and performance.

    Pro

    • Fast CPU
    • Quiet
    • Even more flexible with hard disk equipment
    • Flexible with memory
    • Price still ok, compared to 1621xs+

    Contra

    • Currently none known
