I bought two of them and am basically satisfied. The backup programme is ok, it does what it should. The power supply units emit a loud, high-frequency hum even when the PC is switched off and the HDs are in energy-saving mode. You can have them replaced by Seagate free of charge or, alternatively, you can always switch off the power strip, then the power supply units will also be quiet. But because of the circumstances and because Seagate should have noticed the buzzing when testing the HD (it is a common problem according to the hotline), I deduct one star.

    • Quiet

    Contra

    • Buzzing power supply units (replaceable free of charge)

Sensational, small, handy, lying down and easy to use. Exactly what I needed. Can also be connected directly to the beamer, without a PC in between, so it is especially suitable for saving and watching films....

Very fast hard drive with 7.27TB effective free memory. Gets very hot in continuous operation!

The information is starting to get annoying: the 8'001'554'825'216 bytes are just 7.2773 TB of effective free memory. With such huge amounts of data, this is a difference of 6.85% between the product specification and the actual available storage space.

The product dimensions are the same as for the 4TB and 5TB versions. The design with the perforated blue base and the perforated side panels also remains the same. The noise level is pleasantly quiet; I cannot confirm any annoying whistling or similar from the mains adapter.

After a few hours of continuous use (2 x Robocopy and 1 x Explorer copy from 3 other hard disks running at the same time), the disk actually gets up to 10° hotter than other external disks at 56°. Only time will tell if this will become a problem. I have displayed the temperature values with CrystalDiskInfo 6.3.2 from the S.M.A.R.T. value C2. The 'airflow temperature' BE wid displayed at 46° at the same time.

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.4 x64 shows the following values for the freshly connected, empty disk on a SATA/300 USB 3.0 port:
    Sequential Read : 190.028 MB/s
    Sequential Write : 185.786 MB/s
    Random Read 512KB : 53.192 MB/s
    Random Write 512KB : 96.770 MB/s

Purchase price end of April 2015: CHF 299.-

    Buy recommendation

What is the point of judging a hard disk (external)? It has the necessary capacity (used as a backup medium). The housing is stable and the hard drive runs quietly.
I would have preferred a 2.5" hard drive (they don't need
an external power supply), but 8 TB is not yet available.

    • Solid workmanship

    As a backup medium

I am currently using it as a TimeMachine backup medium. Performance is good, but the drive is a bit noisy, especially when reading/writing.
