Yes, it is quite strict, although I and the older children ( teenagers) can handle it if the toast is not too thick, but otherwise we have been very happy with it for almost 2 years.
A square waffle shape is included as well as a sandwich tray for triangular sandwiches. The problem with this is that by cutting the sandwiches into triangles at an angle, the space for the filling is extremely limited. So more than one slice of ham and one slice of cheese won't fit.
Tip: The shell-shaped troughs are much better. This way you can also put filling in the middle of the bread slices, and the bread is only "welded together at the edge to form a perfect pocket" like a ravioli. Ideal for e.g. mushroom ragout, pasta sauce from the day before etc.

From my experience, it is normal for these units to still smoke, due to production and materials. I plugged the appliance in on the balcony for 10 minutes and let it smoke out. This is also done with new Teflon pans; I always boil the pans with water first and then clean them before using them for the first time. So also with this appliance (simply dry, without water) and this with all inserts! Afterwards, clean with a rinsing agent. I'm not sure now, but I'm sure it says something like that in the instructions.
