Synology Ds916+
Maybe because the DS916 + has a slightly faster processor, twice as much RAM and another USB 3.0 port.
Yes, sure. Shut down the old server cleanly and disconnect it from the power supply. Remove the 4 hard disks and reinstall them in the new NAS. As long as the hard disks work, no data can be lost.
The NAS supports SSD cache only in the normal drive bays. Holes are provided in the bays to install 2.5 inch SATA SSDs. You need at least two screws for installation. The NAS does not have mounting bays for NVMe cache modules.
Yes without a problem. Personally, I have two hard drives for storage and two SSDs. Both SSDs serve as cache. fast and efficient. In addition, access to the library of applications for Synology's DSM (Disk Station Manager). Sorry for the language is Google Translate.
Good day The NAS also runs with 2.5 inch hard disks and SSDs. Here is a link to the datasheet on the Synology website: https://www.synology.com/de-de/products/DS916+#spec The NAS can also be operated with only one hard disk. (However, then without data security)
As far as I know, the integrated transcoding engine only works with DS Video. Since Plex is not officially supported, you have to switch to DS Video. According to our own experience, Plex can only process one Full HD stream simultaneously and only runs on the CPU.
Not in my opinion. Since 2.5'' HDDs are per se less powerful than 3.5'' HDDs, it makes no sense to buy a high-end model of the Diskstation. In addition, ARM CPUs require less power than Intel Atom CPUs. I would also advise against a configuration of 3 hard disks. A RAID 5 only really makes sense with 4 hard disks, otherwise I would advise a RAID 1 with 2 hard disks. My suggestion for an "eco-build": a 2-bay Synology Diskstation and either 2 economical 3.5 or 2.5 inch HDDs, simply a little larger (2TB).
Not yet. But it's my turn to try it out. It sounds promising and should actually work. According to Roon, an external SSD must simply be connected for the database, because Roon explicitly points out not to run it on normal HDs. I will be able to say more in about 1 week.
According to a sign on a Synology Booth, the DS916+ can output either a 4K stream alone or 3 1080p streams simultaneously.
This should be possible. Here are some instructions: http://www.synology-wiki.de/index.php/TeamSpeak_3_Server_Paket
Not mandatory. I recommend that you generally secure your network so that it is protected with a firewall (which is an option with most routers).
