Firstly, there is no risk of tripping or the cable getting twisted and breaking over time, and secondly, it is easier to access in case of problems. I'm using this cable with ubiquiti poe switches to power a couple of wifi access points. They work flawlessly despite the thinness. Probably the only thing you need to worry about that you don't kink / bend them to extreme degrees (they are not as flimsy / sensitive like fiber cable) but due to the thinness they obviously have no shielding or protective layer on the inside.

The Thunderbolt adapter would of course be better because of the speed. However, the modem could lead to a bottleneck because, as already mentioned, it is older. But it should work 95% of the time.
