@Dan: There is a 5.25"" drive slots mentioned in the specs. Is this an error? Or what is it for then?

Our specs are incorrect, we've corrected the page. Thank you for pointing this out. The case doesn't have a 5.25" drive slot. It has 2.5" x11 or 3.5" x10 for HDD/SSDs.

Am I interpreting the photos correctly, an optical drive would not be directly accessible, the entire front cover would always have to be torn out in order to insert or remove a medium?

Indeed, the case has no slot for the DVD drive. So an external one would be the best solution if you need one.
