Yes, you can simply plug it in and it does not need any drivers. Attention: the more disks you connect, the less speed you have because it is only a multiplier and not a "real" expansion card. Max. 3-4 disks on one side should still bring the maximum. I have never used a hot plug.

I have no experience with OMV, but under Linux (openSUSE Leap 15.1) this controller works perfectly.
No X1 is not possible, the slot would be much too short. This card is a PCIexpress X2, so it only fits in slots from X2 and larger. It also works in X4, X8 or X16 slots, so it does not necessarily have to be plugged into an X2 slot.
