Yes, you need a base station because the cameras cannot be connected to another WLAN. There is no corresponding menu in the settings (or at least I haven't found one). But setting up the system was no problem. Everything was installed, connected and set up in less than an hour. Since then, everything has been working perfectly.
About the range: In my case, the base station is connected to the Internet router in the basement. The connection to a camera outside on a soffit at a distance of approx. 20m did not work because the signal was already too weak.
If you position the base station in the middle of the open-plan office and the cameras at half the remaining distance of 20-25 metres, i.e. 10-12 metres from the base station, it should work. The cameras will then cover the remaining distance to the end of the room without any problems.
Since the image quality is excellent, you can still see details even then.
I am very satisfied with the Arlo camera. I had bought the set of 5.
I have a subscription which costs nothing. With it, I can view the videos for a week.
The cameras have a battery which should be charged once a month.
You can charge the cameras via a USB plug. This is very small and not very well designed for outdoor use.
There was only one charging cable in the set of 5. As I said, the plug is very small and I used a file to file the plug out of standard cables.
Arlo touts the selectivity setting (areas in which motion is detected that is eventually recorded). However, these only work when the cameras are powered.
In the event of a power failure, the camera will still work thanks to the battery, but the alarm will not be guaranteed because the selectivity setting will not work.
