Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream continues to follow the adventures of Sophie and Plachta. After leaving Sophie's hometown of Kirchen-Bell, the two discover a giant tree that has previously appeared to Plachta in a dream. As they approach it, they are drawn into a mysterious vortex. Sophie awakens alone in a strange world - the Earth Cradle - and it is not long before Sophie learns of an alchemist named Plachta who lives on the outskirts of the city. To her astonishment, however, it is not her friend, but a girl with only the same name. What other surprises await Sophie on this journey?

In the course of the adventure, she meets the aspiring alchemist Ramizel Erlenmeyer, who agrees to help her in her time of need. The story elegantly unfolds with a charming visual style that combines the art of the Mysterious subseries with the high-quality graphics and animation from Atelier Ryza 2: Lost Legends and the Secret Fairy. In search of her missing friend, Sophie must confront many monsters that haunt the world. As soon as players encounter an enemy, the battle starts immediately without loading times - a novelty in the series. From now on, the battles are seamless.

In addition, battle groups now consist of six members, three in the front row and three behind. This creates two teams that work together in turn-based battles. The system opens up a wide range of exciting strategies for players to use to confront their enemies. As in the previous Atelier parts, alchemy once again plays a large role in Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream. The game builds on the panel synthesis system of the Mysterious subseries, in which materials are placed in the panel slots to create items. The game allows both aspiring and experienced alchemists to synthesize items in a way that is convenient for each. Two different panel types facilitate the crafting process. Restricted panels are difficult to master, but allow crafting items with stronger effects.
