This adapter uses Intel's Ethernet semiconductor component, the Intel Ethernet Controller X550, to provide 10 Gigabit Ethernet on current server platforms. The adapter is backwards compatible with 1000 Base-T networks. So you can continue to use your old 1000 Base-T network before you fully upgrade to 10 Gigabit.
