The HP Smart Array P840 Controller is a full-height SAS RAID controller with 12 Gbit/s and PCIe3 x8, providing enterprise-class storage performance, increased internal scalability, and data protection features for HP ProLiant Gen9 rack and tower servers. It is equipped with 16 internal physical connections and offers higher server availability by providing advanced storage features, including online migration to RAID levels between any RAID levels with FBWC, global online spare, and proactive alerts.

This controller supports 16 drives without the need for the SAS expansion card to provide a point-to-point connection to the SSDs, ensuring the lowest latency. This controller includes location-independent FBWC, allowing data in the cache to be migrated to a new controller.

The Gen9 controllers support the HP Smart Storage Battery, which enables support for multiple Smart Array Controllers, facilitating an easy upgrade process.
