Fiber optic patch cables are defined components of an internationally standardized structured cabling system according to ISO/IEC 11801. Historically, various connectors have been used in structured cabling, with the following still being relevant: LC, SC, E2000, and MPO/MTPE. A fiber optic patch cable represents the shortest connection between a passive cabling port and an active network port, or a point-to-point connection between two active network ports. Quality classes allow for qualitative differentiation of fiber optic patch cables depending on the network service. Similar terms for patch cables include patch cable, adapter cable, connection cable, hybrid cable, jumper, and connecting cord.
