DDR3 DIMM with 240 Contacts

Crucial DIMMs with 240 contacts are used as DDR3 memory for desktop computers. DDR3 is the latest generation of memory featuring an improved architecture for extremely fast data transfer rates.

Dual Inline Memory Modules (DIMMs) consist of multiple memory components mounted on a printed circuit board. The gold contacts on the underside of the DIMM connect the module to a slot on a larger printed circuit board. The contacts on the front and back of DIMMs are not connected to each other.

Each 240-contact DIMM provides a 64-bit data path (72-bit for ECC, Registered, or Fully Buffered modules). Standard DDR3 DIMMs with 240 contacts are currently available in speeds of PC3-8500 (DDR3 1066 MHz) and PC3-10600 (DDR3 1333 MHz). Additional speeds will be added as technology becomes available.

To use DDR3 memory, your motherboard must have 240-contact DIMM slots and a chipset that supports DDR3. This is because DDR3 SDRAM DIMMs do not fit into DDR2 DIMM or DDR DIMM slots.

240-contact DIMMs may contain varying numbers of black components, but they always have 120 contacts on both the front and back, totaling 240. DIMMs with 240 contacts are approximately 133.35 mm long and 30 mm high, though the height may vary. While DDR3 DIMMs with 240 contacts, DDR2 DIMMs with 240 contacts, DDR DIMMs with 184 contacts, and DIMMs with 168 contacts are all roughly the same size, 240-contact DIMMs and 184-contact DIMMs only have a notch in the contact row.
