Captivated by the groove, she recruits a group of amateurs from her hometown to compete in the Battle of the Bands against the art school favorites, La Tormenta.

Backbeat is a tribute to the 16- and 32-bit games of the 1990s, reenacting the challenges and victories of the last days of analog life and the birth of the internet. The suburbs of Washington D.C. are reflected in diner parking lots, shopping malls, and dimly lit arcades.

A colorful cast of side characters, both friends and foes, accompanies Watts in her struggle for leadership, success, and keeping the band together.
