If the OEM radio installed at the factory is to be replaced by an aftermarket radio in a vehicle controlled via the CAN bus, a specific CAN bus adapter is required. Both specific and universal CAN bus adapters convert relevant digital data from the vehicle-specific data bus into analog signals. Depending on the adapter, various signals or comfort functions such as ignition power, lighting, reverse signal, or even a speed signal are read and provided in analog form for different aftermarket solutions.
