Also known as sunshades or lens hoods, they keep light that would otherwise enter the lens from outside the field of view at bay. This prevents unnecessary light from being diffusely or directionally reflected off the lens surfaces and edges within the lens barrel and camera body. Such stray light can obscure the image or overlay it with light spots and ghost images, thus degrading contrast. Lens hoods can significantly improve image quality, especially in situations with light coming in at an angle from the front and in very bright environments outside the frame.
