Boyce:Hanging Gardens

Martin Boyce (born 1967 in Hamilton, Scotland, lives and works in Glasgow) explores the ideas of Western modernism in his works. By making slight alterations to the forms of individual objects associated with him, he creates independent sculptures in a new context. By referencing elements from architecture, design, and art of the early 20th century, he captures the aura of modernity without ignoring the present, as evident in his references to poetry, nature, film noir, and post-punk music. In 2011, Boyce was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize for this reason. 'Hanging Gardens' features a fragmented landscape designed by Boyce, containing over 30 of his works from 2004 to 2018. The scene evokes in the viewer a sense of the last traces of human presence and the relics of an imaginary utopia that now exists independently of its former existence.
