At its core, Yakuza: Like a Dragon is an underdog story. The protagonist, Ichiban Kasuga, a member of a rather insignificant Yakuza family, must work hard for his fortune. He served time for a crime he didn't commit to protect his patriarch and father figure, Masumi Arakawa. After 18 years in prison, he discovers that his former clan has been almost completely dismantled. The few remaining members are being hunted on the streets – possibly by his old patriarch. Ichiban feels that he has been betrayed. He wants to uncover the truth – and thus begins the story of Yakuza: Like a Dragon.

Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking thug from a rather insignificant Yakuza family in Tokyo, is sentenced to 18 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Firm in his beliefs, he serves his time and returns to society, only to find that no one is waiting for him in freedom and that his clan has been destroyed by his closest confidant. Lonely and confused, he sets out to uncover the truth behind his family's betrayal, reclaim his life, and along the way become an unexpected hero for the city's outcasts.
