Alpenleder exclusively works with full-grain leather. All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are so-called open leathers that cannot hide their imperfections through structural embossing or color but stand by their origin. Each hide is inspected by a specialist to determine its suitability for bags. The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned: In the tanning process, toxic chrome salts are not used as is common; instead, the leather is tanned with tree bark. They also exclusively use azo-free dyes from European production for the colored leathers. For the majority of the collection, they even completely forgo chemical dyes and preserve the leather solely with oil. The unique feel, impregnation, patina, and intense color tone are achieved through cooking in pure vegetable fat. The leather remains porous and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which fills in scratches and scuffs through rubbing. Alpenleder bags become more beautiful the longer they are used.
