The manufacturer Alpenleder exclusively works with full-grain leather. All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are known as open leathers, which do not hide their imperfections through structural embossing or color, but rather embrace their origin. Each individual hide is inspected by a specialist to determine its suitability for bags.

The leathers used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned. The tanning process does not involve toxic chrome salts; the leathers are tanned with tree bark.
