The manufacturer Alpenleder exclusively works with "full-grain leather." All products are made from whole hides, with leather thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 3.5 mm. Alpenleder uses both cowhide and buffalo leather. These are known as "open" leathers, which do not hide their imperfections through structural embossing or color but stand by their origin. Each individual hide is inspected by a specialist to determine its suitability for bags.

The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned. The tanning process does not involve toxic chrome salts; instead, the leathers are tanned with tree bark. For dyed leathers, only azo-free dyes from European production are used. In a large part of the collection, chemical dyes are completely avoided, and the leathers are preserved solely with oil. The unique texture, impregnation, patina, and intense color tone are achieved through boiling in pure vegetable fat. The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which allows scratches and scuffs to be filled in by rubbing.
