Each individual hide is examined by a specialist to determine its suitability for bags. The leathers currently used by Alpenleder are all vegetable-tanned: In the tanning process, toxic chrome salts are not used as is common practice; instead, the leather is tanned with tree bark. They also use only azo-free dyes from European production for the colored leathers. For the majority of the collection, they even completely forgo chemical dyes and preserve the leather solely with oil. The unique feel, impregnation, patina, and intense color tone are created through boiling in pure vegetable fat. The leather remains open-pored and retains its natural properties, such as the pull-up effect, which fills in scratches and scuffs through rubbing.
