In the n-channel metal-oxide transistor, the gate is separated from the source-drain channel by an oxide layer, making it very high-resistance. The current is controlled by the voltage at the gate. There are different types of MOSFETs; here we have an n-channel enhancement type MOSFET, which becomes conductive at a positive voltage and turns off at 0V (and lower).
