The component features two LEDs: a red one for control and an infrared (IR) LED, which is not visible to the naked eye, with a wavelength of approximately 900 nm. However, it can usually be observed with a camera. Both LEDs are protected from excessive current flow by current-limiting resistors. They only light up when the diode is oriented in the forward direction, meaning the current flows from the anode to the cathode. The LEDs require a minimum forward voltage of about 2 V to illuminate.
