We’ve unboxed HTC’s Vive Pro – and have given it a quick go

The new HTC Vive Pro has arrived. Unsurprisingly, we didn’t hesitate a second: As soon as it arrived, we unboxed this high-end VR headset and gave it a go.
Two years have passed since the official launch of HTC's Vive. With the HTC Vive Pro, the first upgraded version of Valve's and HTC's VR headset has now been released. What's new? 78% more pixels, integrated 3D headphones, two stereoscopic front cameras and new mounting options. HTC kindly provided us with a model for testing – no way were we going to say no to that.
The first thing I noticed when I unpacked the Vive Pro was the difference in size. The blue Vive Pro looks much bulkier than the HTC Vive. And in fact, at 555 g, the new model weighs a total of 85 g more than its predecessor. Nevertheless, it felt more comfortable the first time I tried it on. Why? The weight distribution has been evened out and the headset comes with better options to adjust to one’s head shape. Similar to the PSVR, there’s an adjustment wheel on the back, which can be tightened or loosened. Comfort aside, the key improvement for most people is sure to be the higher resolution. And this difference is clearly visible. The improvement from former 2160x1200 pixels to now 2880x1660 pixels provides a sharper image. It’s not quite enough to make pixels completely invisible, but it’s significant progress. Whether this justifies the price, I can’t tell from this quick test. Let’s wait for a more in-depth review, which will follow in the coming days.
