Hello all. I would like to buy an external hard drive with approx. 2 TB for long-term storage of photos, videos, etc.. It is possible that the hard drive will not be used for up to 1-2 years. I am thinking, for example, of the WD Elements with 2TB for currently 60.-. Now to the question. How long does a hard drive like this last? I read on the internet that it lasts about 5-10 years. Do I have to reckon with all my data being gone after 7 years or so? Or do such hard drives usually last longer? Specifically: what is the probability that all the data on the WD Elements 2TB will still be clean after 10 years? (assuming that new data is written to it once a year). Merci and greetings B

In this category there is the filter 'File format', but this is completely unnecessary, because you can format a hard disc with the appropriate program in any file system (if you know how...)

Is there an external hard drive that can be connected to the PC all the time but has an on/off switch? I have a Seagate Expansion Desktop and it just runs all the time, is quite noisy even when I don't access any files from it and makes my whole explorer very slow. I would like to have another solution, as I already need a new one.

I've recently been thinking about how I want to secure all my data products. It's not much so far, but there's probably more and more to come. Can you help me? The hard drive should be quiet, not send data to third parties, be reliable and durable (I would like to use it as storage for the next 15-20 years) and have a password protection function. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello Community I am a hobby photographer and videographer and generate about 0.5-1TB of data per year. Until now, I have stored everything on my WD My Book Duo (in Raid1). I also regularly back it up to a SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE. Since I have recently read a lot of bad things about the WD My Book Duo in the user comments (data is lost when the housing comes off, etc.), I would like to look around for an alternative that is a bit more reliable. Of course, the question is between DAS or NAS. Since I work in Lightroom and also edit videos, access would have to be relatively fast. Therefore, I think that a NAS (according to research) is probably less of an option. But I'm happy to be proven wrong. I'm therefore wavering between SanDisk Professional G-RAID 2 or a Synology DS920+. Does anyone here have experience or is in the same boat? (I'm also curious about experiences with NAS, including saving work files locally for editing - does anyone do that at all). Thanks a lot!

I am looking for a compact hard drive that can automatically copy SD cards for travelling. Does anyone know of such a device?

I am passionate about making YouTube videos and the finished projects now take up a 5T external hard drive, which is now full. For editing, I have another 5T hard drive separately. Since this becomes quite expensive over time to buy the same 5T hard drive over and over again, I am now looking for another solution 10T or more. It should also not be too slow, so that moving the videos does not take too long. Has anyone already had experience with a good hard drive or can recommend something?

Recently, the hard disks on the product page have a price per TB (e.g. 24.40CHF/1TB). It would be great if you could filter/sort the hard drives and generally all storage media by price per TB storage capacity.

Hello all I'm a bit surprised how few USB 3.1C / Thunderbolt HDs there are, even though the transfer is much faster than USB 3.0. Is there any doubt that this standard will hold up in the long run (not that I'll buy Thunderbolt as a backup, and in case of the worst case scenario I'll have to desperately search for a compatible device in a few years :).

My hard drives are suddenly empty. I have a Seagate 2 bay NAS with 2 TB storage that runs with Raid 1. Unfortunately, I was stupid enough not to make a backup of the NAS. There are mainly photos and music on it. I have hired a company to check if the data is still there, unfortunately negative. So what else can I do. Thanks

Hello dear community I'm looking for an external hard drive for games, because my built-in hard drive (gaming laptop) is almost full and I don't want to delete anything.... However, the whole thing is only meant as a temporary solution, for max. one year. After that, I hope to have enough money saved up for a decent gaming computer. I want a HDD or SSD minimum 2TB, USB 3.1, Budget: max 200.- CHF The question is whether an SSD is worth it at all, because I'm paying a steep price for 2 TB, or do you think an HDD is enough? If you tell me it has to be an SSD so that everything runs smoothly, then a 1TB hard drive would also be OK. It will still fit quite a bit on it. Here are my specs: (it's already 4 years old...) CPU: Intel Core i7-6700HQ GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M (4GB GDDR5) DISPLAY: 17.3", 4K UHD (3840 x 2160), IPS STORAGE: 512GB SSD + 2000GB HDD RAM: 32GB DDR4 I hope you can help me. :)

Dear Community, I want to buy a new external disc. It will be used exclusively for backing up data. I have two residences and often travel back and forth. Would you go for an SSD (because no moving parts) or an HDD (because more robust). Thanks for your thoughts!

Hello everybody, Our family photo collection exceeds the capacity of our iMac, so I have moved it to an external HD. But the HD is too slow (2.5" form factor) and makes the whole computer crawl. That's why I'm now looking for a faster external hard drive. We don't edit pictures all the time, but now and then a calendar, photo book, etc. I can't find any speed specifications for all the hard drives, so: - Is it enough for my purposes to just take a 3.5" HDD once? Basically fast enough? - Does anyone have a recommendation for something especially fast among the 3.5" hard disks? - Does it depend on the connection? Which one should I choose? Our iMac has USB and Thunderbolt ports. - SSD seems almost excessive to me, doesn't it? Thanks in advance for any helpful hints!

Hello Digitec and Digitec fans, I am looking for a simple backup solution. Is an external hard drive with software on it a solution? What works? After unsuccessfully unlocking Acronis for Adata SSD.... I am looking for something that works. Greetings, Martin

Which external storage medium is recommended for the Ipad Pro? Photos and study material are to be stored on it. Is the LaCie rugged suitable? Does this work at all? I've only been a Windoof user up to now😁.

Hello to each other I need an external hard drive for my PS4. Which one can you recommend to me here, which costs in the price range of maximum to approx. 80/90 CHF? It wouldn't have to have much more than 1 or 2 TB of storage space, that would be enough for me. P.S. A new internal hard drive is out of the question. Thank you for your answers!

On my Mac, my newer external HDDs keep running endlessly, even when they are not in use or even ejected. This is probably due to the controller in the external enclosure. Ancient USB 2 enclosures manage this without problems. Does anyone have any experience? I have my eye on the 2.5" USB-C HDDs from LaCie.

I am evaluating 3 external USB hard disks that can be stacked well and stably. Does anyone have experience, for example, with this drive (item no. 5982716): https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/seagate-backup-plus-portable-5tb-externe-festplatte-5982716?tagIds=76-535 Or does anyone have another, better suggestion? Many thanks

Is it possible to use an external hard drive for a PC (Windows) and at the same time for a Smart TV without formatting it? In other words, you can move your own videos and pictures from the PC to the external hard drive, but watch the files on a Smart TV. I know that a VGA cable would be more practical. But I still wonder if this is possible. Thanks

Hello I will be attending the Kanti tomorrow and my notebook only has 256GB of memory. That's why I want to get an extra hard drive. An SSD is too expensive, because it should already be 1TB (or even more). I therefore want to buy an external HDD that I can carry with me every day. It should be small and robust. I hope you can recommend some good products. Thanks already, Louis

I find the filter function for external hard disks not really useful: the steps up to 3.9 TB still seem OK, but after that the filter step is too large: 4-9.9 TB. Often you're looking for about 4TB, or 8TB, or something in between (or over 8TB). But having all disks from 4TB up to and over 8TB in one filter makes the whole thing very confusing. With the internal hard disks it's the same problem, I just saw. I suggest the classification 4-5.9 6-7.9 and 8-9.9 TB. Would that be feasible?

Hello all. I'm going to South America with two friends in July. We are taking our GoPro's and maybe a drone with us. As I'm sure you know, even 128 GB card is not enough for that anymore. I don't really want to take my laptop with me to store the files on it. So my question to you is: Is there a storage medium with card slots that can be used without a laptop/PC? Or have you simply taken an external hard drive with you and used it in the internet café? Many thanks in advance!

Which external hard drive can you recommend for photos and videos? It shouldn't be too expensive either.

Hello community, In addition to my daily or weekly backups, I would like to buy a large hard drive or NAS on which I can back up the entire contents of all the computers in my household (5 of them) as well as my music and photo collection every 3-4 months. The hard drive should then disappear into the cupboard again and serve as an "emergency anchor" in case of data loss. Until the day before yesterday, a WD MyBook 8TB was in use. However, it "died" immediately and no longer makes any noise - so it is absolutely unsuitable as a data archive. Do you have a recommendation which external HDD or NAS is suitable for this? I like the MyBook DUO, but is the quality better than the MyBook 8TB?
