Question about Samsung 960 Evo
Will the SSD also fit on a board that does not have an m.2 connector? Can other PCIE slots be used or are there at least adapters?

No, if there is no m.2 SSD connector on the board, it is not possible, but there are SSDs that fit into a PCIE slot, but I have never seen an adapter.
