«We’ve deliberately taken a new, out-of-the-box approach»

First, it was a mobile plan. Then, it was home internet. Now, it’s TV. These days, Galaxus offers everything you could possibly need for your digital life. So, is there anything left for the team behind these services to do?

If there’s anyone who can answer this question, it’s Thomas Peter, Development Leader for Galaxus Mobile, Internet and TV. When I meet him for an interview, he has a relaxed air about him.

Thomas, Galaxus TV is your team’s new baby. Are you happy with it?
Yeah, I’m glad the product’s out there now. Contrary to popular belief, linear TV isn’t dead! Even when we launched Galaxus Internet, we knew there was demand for a TV package. So, it was a no-brainer that we’d offer one in the future.

Why didn’t you launch it at the same time as the Galaxus Internet plans? You could’ve saved yourself from answering a lot of TV-related customer queries at the time.
We’re a small team, so it unfortunately wouldn’t be possible to get everything out there at once.

Still, if the TV package had come out at the same time as the internet plans, there would’ve been some nice bundles.
But that’s exactly the sort of thing we don’t do. None of our customers have to sign up for anything they don’t genuinely need. And besides, we don’t want to persuade anyone into buying a bundle because of a pseudo-discount. We prefer to focus on fair prices for each individual service. Plus, everything can be cancelled on a month-to-month basis.

So could I, say, get Galaxus TV specifically for next year’s Olympics, then cancel it again the following month?
Yep. And if you do sign up, it’ll be ready for you in just a few minutes. I really like our TV package, by the way.

How come?
It brings emotion into the mix. When you use it, you can clearly see that it’s a Galaxus service. Imagine watching your favourite show, knowing it’s being brought to you by Galaxus.

Is that not the case with our internet and mobile plans?
No, because they’re just day-to-day necessities. Nobody needs TV, but it can be enjoyable.

Seeing as you like our TV package so much, is it going to be expanded in future?
There are certainly ways we could develop it. I think it’d be good if we could integrate the services offered by streaming platforms. Apple already does that with its TV box. Or maybe when people buy a TV from us, the Galaxus TV app could be pre-installed?

Are you allowed to share any figures with us? How’s this side of the business going?
No hard figures, sorry – that’s essentially a trade secret. What I can say is that we’re pleasantly surprised at how well our TV package has been received. We have an internal dashboard displaying the number of sign-ups and active users. That number’s always going up, much to the team’s delight.

Let’s move from your team’s youngest baby to the oldest: Galaxus Mobile. Tell us about that.
We moved our mobile phone plans from Digitec to Galaxus in May 2023. At the same time, we stopped doing promotions.

So no more crazy deals?
Exactly. We want fair prices for everyone – whether they’re new customers or existing ones. We’ve actually managed to reduce the monthly prices of two of our plans. Larger providers on the market don’t tend to do that.

So you don’t miss discount battles?
No, not at all. I’m glad we’ve stopped playing that game. If providers do that regularly, their customers will come to expect it and eventually get used to it. We’ve deliberately taken a different approach, partly because we’re an online shop. We’re accustomed to thinking about sustainable, long-term growth, not throwing everything we have at short-term gains. One thing I’m really pleased about is that our customers understand we’re treating them fairly.

What’s your response to the criticism of the network?
Obviously, I’m aware of the criticism. We can’t influence network quality directly – we’re essentially subtenants of Sunrise. Generally speaking, the three network providers operating in Switzerland all have their strengths and weaknesses. However, our partner sees network expansion as a high priority. That being said, installing new antennas isn’t that simple. Planning objections can often make it impossible. Ultimately, every customer can switch to a competitor on a different network at any time if they’re not satisfied.

Speaking of switching, do customers often move between mobile providers?
Not really. People in Switzerland tend to be wary of change. A lot of them have been overpaying for years because they’ve stuck with their pricey plans. And mobile providers obviously have zero interest in losing their loyal customers.

It’d help if more people were aware of Galaxus Mobile.
We’ve noticed that Galaxus Mobile is becoming better known. We measure brand awareness on a regular basis. Everyone’s heard of the three main players on the market, but the smaller ones are catching up. Our brand recognition level is really quite remarkable. An increasing number of people are answering «yes» when asked if they’ve heard of Galaxus Mobile. That’s partly down to successful word-of-mouth advertising. It’s really great that a large number of customers have gone for the Family + Friends option, giving them even cheaper calls and internet access.

If somebody wants to switch to a different mobile provider, they can do it quickly. Changing internet provider, on the other hand, is no easy feat…
It’s true that there are a couple more hoops to jump through there. We were anticipating that, so we prepared accordingly. Then again, there are always surprises. The mistakes that can happen during the process are almost unbelievable, ranging from incorrectly labelled connections to cables having to be laid through the garden to previous tenants blocking the line. Even so, we’ve managed to give a Galaxus Internet plan to pretty much everyone who’s wanted one. It’s much easier with the new fibre-optic connections.

How come?
A lot of expansion work is being done on that at the moment. As a result, we can connect new customers to new lines that weren’t previously used by other providers. When that happens, switching provider’s just a matter of waiting a few days for the router to arrive, connecting it and getting the internet up and running. If somebody’s getting fibre-optic internet for the first time, they’ll be thinking about who the best provider is. We obviously hope Galaxus Internet will come up as the most common answer to that question.

To wrap up, what’s next for your side of the business?
We have a clear vision – to offer a no-nonsense service at a reasonable price. Our role and mission in the market is to come up with new, out-of-the box ideas, such as moving away from discount battles. We were also the first to scrap minimum contract durations and activation fees for new mobile plans. We’re keen to continue shaking up a market that’s been seriously rigid for many, many years.

I have a question about Galaxus Internet that I need to ask on the Community’s behalf. When will people finally be allowed to use a router of their choice?
I guess that question was inevitable. I’m aware that some people would like to have more freedom when it comes to routers. We’re currently assessing options for a bridge mode, as well as keeping an eye out for alternative models. However, I unfortunately can’t give you a timeline on that yet.

Thanks for answering that – and my previous questions – Thomas. I hope you’re ready for a few more in the comments section.
Absolutely! Thanks for the chat.
