Vivo patents smartphone with drone

Vivo has secured a patent: a drone built into a mobile. Does this mean air selfies are coming soon? Could be, but not a given.

Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo has filed a patent that separates the camera from the smartphone. The official sponsor of Euro 2021 has plans to put a drone inside a smartphone, LetsGoDigital reports. The magazine cites a 20-page document obtained by the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).

Device casing and flying cameras

In the patent, Vivo mentions a «device shell» and a «flight camera» as well as delivering sketches. Little is known about the technological details. The patent is more about the principle of a phone with a drone. Allegedly, there’s an slot in the device case that accommodates the camera. This means that the flying camera can be taken out and reinserted into the device. «If the flight camera is outside of the device’s casing, it can be detached from the device casing,» the patent further states.

In simpler terms this means that a drone can be housed in a smartphone. The drone has four propellers, two cameras, a separate battery as well as transmission/reception antennas.

No device planned yet

For the time being, the patent merely describes an idea Vivo has come up with. Apparently, the company thought the idea was so good that they patented it. However, this doesn’t mean that the drone phone will ever be produced. Manufacturers patent all kinds of ideas they want to protect from the competition.
