Unihertz Titan: competition for Blackberry

With Blackberry phones, the physical smartphone keyboard experienced a revival. The Titan Rugged Phone is Unihertz’s attempt to grab market shares off Blackberry.
Blackberry revived the physical keyboard with the KeyOne. With success. Now the first competitors are following suit. After the f(x) Phone, the manufacturer Unihertz has now joined the fight for market shares.
While Blackberry and f(x) – possibly pronounced «Function Phone» – focus on slim elegance, Unihertz’s Unihertz Titan is stable and massive. Hello, nostalgia – the Titan looks like a Blackberry Passport from the year 2014.

No flagship specs, but good specs
The feature that will probably stand out most in the Unihertz Titan is its runtime, as it features a 6000mAh battery. To put this into perspective: with a 4000mAh battery and little use, a Huawei P30 Pro lasts a bit more than two days. Plus, the Unihertz phone comes with an integrated walkie-talkie.

The platform runs on Android, which is displayed on a 1440×1440 pixel screen. The IPS screen measures 4.5 inches diagonally, and houses what Blackberry fans like so much: the physical keyboard. This comes in the QWERTY layout.
The price of around 200 US dollars (excluding taxes) for pre-orderers suggests it features a MediaTek System-on-a-Chip. Why? Snapdragons, at least the flagships, are usually more expensive and the Kirin is only used in Huawei phones.
IP67: the weak spot
However, there is a catch. The Unihertz Titan only has IP67 certification. This rating consists of two components: the number 6 indicates that the device is resistant to dust. 6 is the highest mark. The 7 states that the Unihertz Titan only lets water get into the interior of the housing after at least 30 minutes in a water depth of one metre. The best rating is 8. IP68 guarantees indefinite protection in a water depth defined by the manufacturer.
The current flagships on the market are mostly IP68 certified, but remain fragile. The Unihertz Titan, however, is rugged and has a stable case. Unlike other rugged smartphones, Unihertz isn’t willing to compromise on ease of use. It’s equipped with a fingerprint scanner, Face Unlock, Wireless Charging and Dual SIM support.
Early adopters can order the Unihertz Titan on the official website.
