Trailer Tuesday: Star Wars: Episode 9, Lost in Space 2 and Bloodshot
by Luca Fontana
This week's episode of Trailer Tuesday is small but fine: the heir of a usurper on Netflix, a backstage pass of superlatives on Disney Plus and an ultra-creepy Guillermo del Toro movie in the cinema. And finally, the WTF moment of the week.
This week’s Trailer Tuesday isn’t as bombastic as last week’s. But it doesn't have to be. Sometimes it's the smaller works, the ones that aren’t produced in massive studios, with billions of money and famous Hollywood stars, that are most memorable.
Here’s what you can look forward to beyond «Star Wars» and Vin Diesel.
Henry V was the son of the usurper of England. According to William Shakespeare's play or Netflix's trailer, Henry was a moody prince who turned his back on the royal court and lived a dissolute life among the common people – until his father died. Suddenly the stubborn prince, who didn't want to be one, became king of England. At the age of 25.
There's no historical evidence of his wild youth. In fact, he's said to have been quite prudent: the man who was also known as the second English monarch of the House of Lancaster stared off with a policy of reconciliation and united the aristocratic houses of England that had been intriguing for decades. Yes, sounds a lot like George R. R. Martin and «A Song of Ice and Fire».
Then Henry decided to take advantage of the weakness of France, weakened by civil wars: with an invasion army of 12,000 men, he moved to the Normandy coast to conquer the empire. And Netflix allows us to watch what happened then.
Start date: 1 November 2019, Netflix
A backstage pass like you've never seen before – a glimpse behind the scenes that only a few people outside Disney were allowed. That's exactly what «The Imagineering Story» promises, one of the first of many documentaries that will follow on Disney Plus.
The focus is on those employees who let people's dreams become reality in the parks and attractions. They are the ones who don't only imagine but also build things. The robots in «Pirates of the Caribbean», for example. The giant film sets. Simply everything. That's why the somewhat peculiar name of their profession is the Imagineers - a combination of «to imagine» and «to engineer».
The documentary film is made by Leslie Iwerks, who received an Oscar nomination in 2007 for the documentary «Recycled Life». Sure, it's a Disney production – but with Iwerks behind it, I'm hopeful that the movie will offer more than the same old Hollywood story.
Start date: 12 November 2019, Disney Plus
I really liked the first trailer. The second made me look forward to this movie even more. This film is inspired by true events and shows how, in 1862, a daring aeronaut, Amelia Wren (Felicity Jones), and an aspiring meteorologist, James Glaisher (Eddie Redmayne), climb into a hot air balloon at groundbreaking heights to make new scientific discoveries. But their expedition turns into a relentless fight for survival.
This film will first be shown in the cinema and a few days later on Amazon Prime. That's a tactic we've seen before with Netflix movies. By showing a movie in the cinema, it becomes eligible for an Oscar nomination.
Release date in Swiss cinemas: 6 December 2019 Available on Amazon Prime: 20 December 2019
«Antlers». The title of this film could be a reference to one of the most frightening and creepiest fictitious beings from the folklore of the Native American Algonquian tribes: the Wendigo, a vengeful spirit that takes possession of people and turns them into cannibals. Often depicted as zombies with a deer's head – and antlers.
This trailer is terrifying – especially if you do what I did and watch it at 3 a.m. in the dark because you can't sleep. Great idea. The scariest thing about it is that there's no spoken word in the trailer. Only noises. Chirping. Clacking. A ticking sound in the background. A growl. Goose bumps. I can't wait to see what producer Guillermo del Toro has come up with this time.
Release date in Swiss cinemas: 17 April 2020
What do «Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045» and the Swiss Alpine Club have in common? Hopefully nothing at all. Seriously, what went wrong here?
Start date: sometime in 2020, Netflix

I'm an outdoorsy guy and enjoy sports that push me to the limit – now that’s what I call comfort zone! But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
