It's Tuesday. Time for trailers. Let’s check out HBO's million-dollar embezzlement scandal «Bad Education», Disney's «Artemis Fowl», which should have been released last year and the thrilling «Candyman» remake.

This week in Trailer Tuesday:

  • «Mulan», cinema release: 27 March 2020
  • «Bad Education», HBO release date: 25 April 2020
  • «The Eddy», Netflix release date 8 May 2020
  • «Artemis Fowl», cinema release: 29 May 2020
  • «Candyman», cinema release: 18 June 2020

Mulan Featurette

The short stunt featurette confirms what I've long suspected: the real-life version of Disney's «Mulan» is a reinterpretation of the original. The remake reminds more of Chinese classics such as «Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon», especially when it comes to the handmade action sequences – for example, when the protagonists fly through the air attached to cables that have obviously been removed in post production. I'm a huge fan of such scenes.

Yeah, my anticipation is growing with every trailer, although I can't help but imagine the studio managers rubbing their hands with dollar signs in their eyes. It seems unlikely to me that «Mulan» wasn't specifically designed and produced for the increasingly important Chinese cinema market. After all, Disney's animated version was never so popular that a live-action remake was an obvious next step. Unless the intention is to cash in with the Chinese public.

Oh well, if the film is any good, that's fine by me.

Bad Education

The story is based on true events, sounds totally crazy and is presented by actors who can't help but guarantee a darn good movie. What's the movie about? It's about the charismatic Frank Tassone (Hugh Jackman), who was arrested in the course of a serious scandal: he stole 11.2 million dollars while he was a school board member.

In the early 2000s, he was working in the New York school district of Roslyn. He was very popular, insisted on getting to know each new student personally and regularly having lunch with the students. He even ran a book club for the district's parents. Nice, right?

But there were things that seemed strange. Things that should have made parents and staff at the school wonder – but Tassone was so charming that nobody questioned him. He drove sports cars, wore luxury suits and served exquisite lobsters in the school canteens. And despite increasing budget demands, which the state always fulfilled – for some mysterious reason – the roof of the school building was leaking throughout Tassone's career at the school.

Well, well...

Release date: 25 April 2020, HBO

The Eddy

«The Eddy» is a musical drama set in contemporary Paris that revolves around a jazz club, its owner, the house band and the dangerous city that surrounds it.

I am excited because Damien Chazelle is among the creators of series. He directed «La La Land», one of my favourite movies. So when Chazelle comes up with something new that’s to do with jazz – just like «La La Land» – I'm definitely on board.

Release date: 8 May 2020, Netflix

Artemis Fowl

From Wikipedia: Following his father's presumed death at the hands of the Russian Mafia, and his mother's subsequent descent into madness, Artemis stopped attending his boarding school, assumed control of the Fowl criminal empire, and embarked on a crime spree to restore the family fortune and fund Arctic expeditions to rescue his father.

Wow, that sounds dark. You sure this is something Disney would do?

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 29 May 2020

Candyman

Nothing's scarier for me than the bee-in-mouth scene from the 1992 «Candyman». Holy crap, that's beyond what I can see without flinching.

Now Jordan Peele, director of «Get Out» and «Us», is producing a remake of the horror movie. The trailer looks darn good. I'm tempted to watch this movie, even though I suspect I might faint during the bee scene – once again.

Release date in Swiss cinemas: 18 June 2020

I'm an outdoorsy guy and enjoy sports that push me to the limit – now that’s what I call comfort zone! But I'm also about curling up in an armchair with books about ugly intrigue and sinister kingkillers. Being an avid cinema-goer, I’ve been known to rave about film scores for hours on end. I’ve always wanted to say: «I am Groot.»
