The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra puts an end to thinner, lighter, faster. Okay, it’s faster, but weighing in at 234 grams, it’s not lighter. And it’s powerful. Plus, it features a second screen on the back.

At a press conference, Xiaomi unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra for the European market. Not only does the smartphone boast promising specs, it also features a gadget built into the back that’s only been seen in smartphones that are considered «weird devices from China». A second screen.

The rear screen

The eye catcher of the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra is the AMOLED screen on the back. It has a screen diagonal of 1.1 inches and is designed to take selfies with the phone's main camera array. Thus, the Mi 11 Ultra offers three cameras to take that perfect Instagram picture.

This camera setup is quite impressive:

  • 50 megapixel main camera, 1/1.12" sensor, f/1.95, optical image stabiliser
  • 48 megapixel periscope camera, 120x AI-assisted zoom, 5x optical zoom, f/4.1, optical image stabiliser
  • 48 megapixel ultra-wide angle camera, 128-degree field of view, macro, f/2.2, PDAF

When it comes to the software, Xiaomi has come up with a few tricks with the camera: As described in their press release, if one recording angle isn't enough, the dual-phone recording mode allows users to capture a single video with several cameras. This begs the question of how multi-camera video recording will correlate with wide-angle photo capture, but we'll ignore that for now.

The Mi 11 Ultra records videos with up to 8K resolution, that's 7680×4320 pixels. 8K is only possible with 24 frames per second, but 4K60fps is no problem at all.

The rest of the flagship

At the front, the smartphone’s equipped with a 6.81-inch AMOLED display that supports 10-bit colour depth, displaying 1.07 billion colours at a refresh rate of 120 hertz.

Between the screen and the main camera, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 system-on-a-chip (SoC) powers the phone. This phone boasts a 5000 mAh battery, which is why it weighs 234 grams. To put this into perspective: an iPhone 12 Pro Max weighs 228 grams. The battery can be charged with up to 67 watts, which corresponds to a charging time of 36 minutes. Wireless charging is also possible up to 67 watts.

Of course, the Mi 11 Ultra is capable of 5G and features its own modem, the Snapdragon X60. On top of this, it also offers 12 GB of RAM, 256 GB of internal storage and a sound system by Harman Kardon.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the 20-megapixel selfie camera.

According to Xiaomi.com, the Mi 11 Ultra will be available for order starting Thursday, 20 May 2021 at 1:00 p.m. We don’t yet know if that’s also when it will be available from us, but we currently assume this will be the case. We'll keep you updated.
