The RTX 4060 does not offer a leap in raw performance

With the RTX 4060, Nvidia is launching the smallest graphics card in the RTX 40 series to date. The leap in performance compared to the predecessor card does not trigger any enthusiasm.
The RTX 4060 offers up to 20 per cent more frames per second (FPS) than the RTX 3060, which is not much compared to the larger models in the RTX 40 series or earlier generation comparisons. This is the conclusion of the reviews by Techpowerup and Computerbase.
Computerbase
Reviewer Wolfgang Andermahr measures in his review an average 18 per cent higher performance of the RTX 4060 compared to the RTX 3060 in 1080p resolution. This corresponds to four per cent more than the competitor product, the AMD Radeon RX 7600, achieves. This is relatively low: the RTX 3060 offered 25 per cent more performance compared to the RTX 2060.
As expected due to the dedicated ray tracing cores, the RTX 4060 clearly outclasses the RX 7600 in ray tracing: by 21 per cent. However, the new Nvidia card is a pure Full HD graphics card. It is not suitable for higher resolutions. Serious ray tracing is also not really possible.
The biggest drawback, however, is the 8 gigabytes (GB) of memory. This is simply too little compared to the RTX 3060 with 12 gigabytes. The efficiency, on the other hand, is very good: the power consumption of the RTX 4060 is significantly lower than that of the RTX 3060 and RX 7600.
The RTX 4060, like all current entry-level graphics cards, is not convincing overall.

Reviewer W1zzard from Techpowerup takes a similar view . In itself, the RTX 4060 is a good graphics card. However, the recommended retail price of 300 US dollars is high. Especially in comparison with the RX 7600, which is available for 50 dollars less - and for more or less the same performance. However, if the card were to fall to 250 dollars, it would probably be the best option.
In contrast to Andermahr, W1zzard considers the 8 GB VRAM to be sufficient. There would be a few exceptions where the 8 GB would not be enough. But in thousands of other games, this is not a problem at all. Even in his test suite, which only contains newer games, he did not reach the limits with the 8 GB.
W1zzard wonders whether PC gamers will increasingly turn to consoles in future given the high prices for entry-level cards. There, a complete package is available for only slightly more money.
The RTX 4060 goes on sale on 29 June. The first cards are expected in our shop next week. There you will also see the price.
