Just under three months before the launch, EA presents the latest instalment in the well-known racing series. "Need for Speed Heat" will be released in November and exudes a bit of an "underground" vibe.

The very first "Need for Speed" raced across CRT monitors and televisions back in 1994. With several successful spin-offs, the series earned its status as the king of fast-paced action racing games. In recent years, however, the quality has left more and more to be desired. The last instalment that was well received by fans was probably Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, which is almost ten years old. Personally, I also enjoyed the 2015 reboot "Need for Speed" for a short time. Primarily because of the completely absurd FMV cutscenes.

Despite this, EA doesn't seem to want to step on the brakes. Without much fanfare, the publisher presented the first trailer for "Need for Speed Heat" in a livestream on Wednesday. Not much information is available yet. Once again, you have to prove yourself in street races and flee from the police. The trailer shows lots of hot cars and races that take place both during the day and at night. Of course, you can also customise your cars with rear spoilers and shiny rims to your heart's content.

The game exudes a bit of the vibe of the iconic "Need for Speed Underground". Unfortunately, EA has not been able to fulfil expectations in the past. The last "Need for Speed Payback" was a colossal flop - at least on the part of fans and critics. Even back then, the developer behind it was Ghost Games. However, the series is apparently still profitable. It will be interesting to see what direction "Heat" takes. I hope more heart and soul went into the game than the tagline: "Step on the gas during the day and go all out at night" 😴. The first detailed gameplay scenes will follow at Gamescom in Cologne next week.

"Need for Speed Heat" will be officially released on 8 November for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. With the paid Origin Access Premier/Play you can already play on 5 November.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
