Streaming service Hulu is working on new «The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy» series
Grab your towel and don't panic: Disney’s streaming service Hulu is developing a TV series adaptation of «The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy».
According to industry magazine Deadline, streaming provider Hulu is working on a series based on Douglas Adams' successful novel series «The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy».
«Lost» executive producer Carlton Cuse will act as producer and showrunner of the series. The script is written by «Wonder Woman» author Jason Fuchs. The series was commissioned by ABC Studios who belong to the Walt Disney Company. The latter own the rights to «The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy» novels. The Sci-Fi series will be broadcast on Hulu, Disney's streaming service that they bought in May.
What hasn’t been announced it when the series will air and which directors and actors will be involved. Neither Hulu nor Disney have made an official statement yet.
From radio to book to film
Douglas Adams originally created «The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy» in 1978 as a BBC radio comedy. The series was so popular that Adams began to continue it as a novel. When the first book appeared in 1979 – the first of a five-part trilogy, as Adams later wrote – it was an instant hit, reaching bestseller status after just two weeks and selling over 250,000 times within three months of its publication. To date, 14 million copies have been sold. In 2005, the first film adaptation with star cast followed.
The story of «The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy» follows the intergalactic adventures of Arthur Dent, an unlucky Englishman whose house is knocked down in order for a motorway to be built. But then the bureaucratic alien race of the Vogons destroys the entire planet Earth to build a hyperspace highway exactly where the earth once stood. Luckily, Arthur's best friend Ford Prefect is also an alien who rescues him and takes him on a strange trip through the galaxy – accompanied by their pocket-sized travel guide: the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
