Since February 25, Valve's new handheld PC Steam Deck has been available for purchase for early reservations, and while the first generation has just hit the market, Valve mastermind Gabe Newell revealed in a recent EDGE magazine interview that they already have a successor model in mind as well. This goes along with the fact that the most expensive trim level of the just-released device is also the most popular.
"We thought that the entry price would be the deciding factor [for success], but it turns out that the most popular model by far is the most expensive," Newell said. "That's an example of why we're a little surprised by what our customers are telling us. They're basically saying, 'We'd like an even more expensive version of this,' in terms of performance or whatever. That's the reason we always love bringing something to market and delivering it. Because we learn a lot from it, and that helps us plan Steam Deck 2."
Steam Deck: competition and VR desired
In addition, Newell expressed hope in the interview that other manufacturers would develop products similar to Steam Deck: "We hope that other hardware manufacturers in the PC space will use the work we've done on the software side to develop similar and related devices. The first step is to make sure you can play the great games that are out there today. The second steps are more about what capabilities mobile devices give us beyond what you get in a traditional desktop or laptop gaming environment."
Accordingly, one such capability for the Steam Deck 2 could be enhanced virtual reality support, "One of the things the deck stands for is battery-powered, high-performance, which you can eventually use for VR applications. You can take the PC and build something that's much more portable. We're not quite there yet, but it's a step in the right direction," the Valve boss said.
