"Spellbreak" is a battle royale that swaps guns for magic

Battle royale games are a dime a dozen. "Spellbreak" mixes the formula into a new magical blend - literally. Instead of AK47s, there are ice spells and fireballs.
Glazing walls of fire, poisonous green clouds of smoke and flying wizards attacking each other with lightning bolts and ice arrows. "Spellbreak" has found a refreshing new formula for the stale battle royale genre. Instead of assault rifles and frag grenades, players fight with spells. After a lengthy beta phase, "Spellbreak" has been officially available as a free-to-play title since the beginning of September.
Familiar and yet different

Like most battle royale games, "Spellbreak" also relies on a huge playing field that slowly contracts due to a storm. As one of a maximum of 42 players, you try to get into the safe circle. You can play solo or in teams of two or three. After taking off from the air, you look for a suitable landing spot and the hunt for equipment begins. There are gloves that grant you two spells for each of the six types of magic: fire, wind, ice, earth, poison or lightning. There are also belts, amulets and shoes to improve your armour, mana and speed. All of the equipment is available in different quality levels, from "ordinary" to "legendary".
Then there are runes that you can use to learn new abilities such as teleportation or invisibility. These can be upgraded within the game. The same applies to the three talents that you select before the game. Because in "Spellbreak" there are classes, which are also divided into the six types of magic. Each class comes with two additional spells, can be levelled up and equipped with better talents.

If you are playing a magic mage, you have a fireball and a wall of fire. You can also equip any glove in the game, such as poison. This results in an explosive combination. Poison clouds can be ignited and cause even more damage.
"Spellbreak" looks atmospheric, plays in a refreshingly different way and is free to play. So there's no reason not to give it a try. And otherwise, just take a look at how Simon and I get fired up.
"Spellbreak" is available on PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
