Solidarity with "GTA 6": Developers show early versions of their games

The "GTA 6" leak makes it clear that many game fans do not understand how game development works. Now other developers are showing solidarity and revealing how rudimentary their games looked at the beginning.
With the leak of over 90 videos of "GTA 6", a new meme has also emerged. A Twitter user commented on the footage saying, "The graphics are some of the first to be finished in a game." From this, the person concluded that the final version of "GTA 6" would not look better than on the leaked footage. Numerous game developers are now proving that this is not the case.
On Twitter, they show their solidarity with Rockstar's employees and show how their games once looked. For the otherwise secretive game industry, such glimpses are quite unique.
"Control": The Telekinetic Senior
The elegant and visually stunning sci-fi shooter that "Control" is today can only be imagined at this stage.
"Horizon Zero Dawn": Attack of the Block Dinos
At least that way I'd be able to hit the shootable upgrade parts better.

"Sea of Thieves": TicTacs on the high seas
What looks like an early version of "Worms" with TicTacs in place of the ball-busting worms is actually "Sea of Thieves."

"Spider-Man": Naked New York
Already in 2018, designer Share McCloskey shared these images from "Spider-Man" for the PS4. At one point here, the boss fight with Electro and Vulture takes place

"The Division": Turning blocks into art
These images are an example from senior level artist Maarten Hof of how the rudimentary block template is transformed into an industrial hall littered with detail.

"Splatoon": The Tofu Prototype
At the GDC 2018 developer conference, game designer Hisashi Nogami demonstrated an early prototype of the colour shooter "Splatoon". Nothing of the brightly coloured Inklings is yet visible in this tofu demo

"God of War": Two bald men on the prowl
That "God of War" didn't always look so impressive either can be seen in the following videos. Here, the son of the angry god of war still shares his father's hairstyle
.
"The Last of Us": Angry Mannequins
In this early prototype, Joel battles faceless mannequins that look like they came straight out of the first Playstation.
"Thirsty Suitors": two black pills meet
Another fine example of the different stages of development is shown in the soon-to-be-released "Thirsty Suitors".

"Call of Duty Modern Warfare": an orange and grey skeleton
The 2019 "Modern Warfare" reboot, like most games, started out as just a few bare blocks.

"Overwatch 2": A dose of detail, please
The same goes for "Overwatch 2," due out in October. Only when the artists have brushed over it digitally does a respectable level emerge.

"Curse of the Lamb": from browser game, to cuddly champagne simulator
Very impressive is the direct comparison of an early version of "Curse of the Lamb" and the finished game. At the beginning, Sektensimulator looked like a browser game from the 00s

Really, it's not surprising that certain gamers have misconceptions about game development. Trailers are still released with the tag "early alpha" - yet they often look better than the finished product. Trailers are marketing products, advertising; they are tweaked and polished until they look perfect. The fact that someone wonders afterwards why a mega-blockbuster like "GTA 6" can look so "ugly" is the logical consequence of this.

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
