What is it like to assemble a PC for the first time?
by Kevin Hofer
Today Sleepy, a PC with new components in an old case, finds a new owner. But before I tell you who wins the sleeper PC, I'll take stock.
100 hours of work. That's how much time I estimate I invested from the original idea to the finished sleeper PC. In addition to building, this also includes planning, writing the articles and editing the videos.
The cost of the components alone is not enough to estimate the value of Sleepy. As of 5 August 2019, the components cost around 2900 francs. Then there is the housing and various screws, spray cans and acrylic panels. I've lost track of the costs for these small parts. It's probably around 400 francs. Then there's the 370 francs for the reservoir.
The biggest item is my labour. Based on my approximate hourly wage, it's over 4,100 francs - you're welcome to do the maths to find out how much I earn gross per month. Sleepy has a total value of around 7770 francs.
You took part diligently in the competition. The first question, what a sleeper PC is, was answered correctly by 4383 people. Around 700 people answered all eight questions correctly. The last question, the one about the number of DVD discs, proved to be a real tricky one. Admittedly, it was a bit nasty, but somehow I had to raise the John Twenty level of the questions a little. The correct answer was three, by the way.
For the prize draw, I'll add all the participants who got all the questions right to an Excel file. I will determine the winner using the random number generator at random.org.
And the winner is - drum roll - Niki Vondru. Congratulations on winning Sleepy, the sleeper PC. I wish you lots of fun with it. Niki has already been informed and is coming to collect the PC from us in Zurich in person.
To all those who have come away empty-handed: You will definitely have another opportunity to win a PC here on digitec.ch. I've learnt a lot from Sleepy and I have no shortage of crazy ideas for further PC building projects. <p
