"Skull and Bones" comes in November and threatens to run right aground

After five years of silence, the ship adventure "Skull and Bones" surprisingly gets a release date in November. However, what we have seen does not make us want to play it.
It was one of the most outstanding trailers of the E3 2017 game show. "Skull and Bones" took the best element from "Assassin's Creed Black Flag", the shipping, and built its own game out of it. Multiplayer duels on the open seas with customizable ships, crew and guns. The idea sounded and still sounds brilliant. After that, however, nothing was heard from developer Ubisoft for years. The game, which was originally only supposed to be an expansion to "Black Flag", apparently sailed through the oceans rather haphazardly. On Thursday evening, the game was finally unveiled again, this time with a release date of November 8, 2022.
I would like to write now, the five years since the first trailer have done the game good. But what Ubisoft shows here looks just like it did back then. With the difference that it is technically no longer up to scratch. In terms of content, there are also hardly any changes recognizable at first glance. It is still primarily a multiplayer game. You can still upgrade your ship in different ways, add armor and equip special weapons. Besides duels against other human pirates, you can storm and loot computer-controlled fortresses. You also collect resources like wood and ore to improve your equipment - from the ship, mind you.

None of this seems really convincing. But I'm happy to be convinced of the opposite. I'm always up for a cozy pirate adventure. But I could also just play Sea of Thieves. That's also four years old, but it looks a lot prettier and has turned into an excellent game.
What do you think? Does "Skull and Bones" go straight to the bottom when it comes out, or is there a decent game hiding behind the musty planks after all?

Being the game and gadget geek that I am, working at digitec and Galaxus makes me feel like a kid in a candy shop – but it does take its toll on my wallet. I enjoy tinkering with my PC in Tim Taylor fashion and talking about games on my podcast http://www.onemorelevel.ch. To satisfy my need for speed, I get on my full suspension mountain bike and set out to find some nice trails. My thirst for culture is quenched by deep conversations over a couple of cold ones at the mostly frustrating games of FC Winterthur.
