Behind the scenes
Digitec Galaxus Hackfest: 54 hours of work presented in 3 minutes
by Martin Jungfer
During the next few days, the screens in our shops won't show manufacturer videos, but trailers of diploma projects of students from the Cast / Audiovisual Media department of Zurich University of the Arts. What are they about? Verdingkinder (contract children), the protein economy, suicide prevention and social media, to name but a few examples.
Culture and Covid isn't exactly a match made in heaven. The students of Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), who usually show their diploma theses as part of an exhibition at their university, would certainly agree with this. Just like last year, the exhibition was again cancelled this year. Nevertheless, the ten students of the Cast / Audiovisual Media course didn't want their audiovisual works to simply disappear into oblivion. After some pondering and discussing, they came up with the idea of showing their trailers on existing screens for people to see. «The content is all available online anyway,» as Caroline Feder, Assistant Cast / Audiovisual Media, stated the beginnings of the cooperation with Digitec Galaxus.
Since Zurich University of the Arts is located right next to the digitec store in Zurich and Caroline Feder knows our video editor Armin Tobler from her studies, it didn't take long before they got in touch with us. We liked the idea. So much so, that instead of the planned store in Zurich, all eleven stores in Switzerland are now showing the diploma project trailers. The projects are all very different when it comes to the topic and form. The mixed-media film «Die Flut» is about the darker side of social media, while «Vergiss mich nie» depicts the lives of contract children in the shape of Instagram posts. «Around the same time, the channel «ichbinsophiescholl» was launched by SWR and BR, which works on the same principle and has generated quite a bit of media attention,» Caroline Feder adds.
From 10 to 20 June, you’ll get to enjoy a nearly eight-minute sequence featuring all eight trailers in a continuous loop while you wait in line to collect your digitec or Galaxus order. To access all full-length versions of the short films, scan the QR code on the screen or click here. If you won’t be in one of our stores in the next few days, feel free to watch all trailers here.
